Outta This World

Last night was the June mixer. We were originally supposed to have it at Puck Fair but since it was their anniversary celebrations, the bar was mad packed from what I heard, I hadn't even made it to the bar! My cell phone started vibrating madly during dinner with accounts of people getting turned away and so many people that it was spilling out to the front. Long story short, we ended up at Grassroots Tavern, a nice dive like bar on St. Marks. I only say it's dive like because the bathroom was pretty decent. Last night's mixer was the biggest crowd we had in a long time. It was also Bill's last mixer as a New Yorker. A bunch of us chipped in and got him and Laura a gift card to Morton's Steakhouse (with locations in NYC and Chicago-which is where they are going), I made chocolate chip cookies and Alison bought cupcakes from Billy's. Below is our first ever group photo in honor of Bill's departure.

CDMOMgroupblog.jpg

I'll post the scan of the card I made in another post. Here was my mix, also in honor of Bill cuz he's outta this world!

2. Stars All Seem To Weep • Beth Orton
3. Sky Starts Falling • Doves
4. Shooting Star • Elliott Smith

14. Man In The Moon • Voice of the Beehive
15. No Stars • Figures On A Beach
16. Lost In Space • Fountains Of Wayne

I lovingly got teased for sewing my cover this month and cutting out stars for my track list. And of course it didn't stop when they learned I made the card for Bill and Laura and baked cookies. HA!

It's A Girl!

Last night was the April mixer and since my mother in law is in town, staying with us to help with the baby, I couldn't let this opportunity pass by. I had to go out! It was a pretty subdued evening starting with dinner at Sapore, an awesome Italian restaurant across the street from the venue. At first it was meeting for dinner with 3 and turned into dinner with 9! And Sapore was a real small place! I easily got buzzed on red wine. The venue we went to was The Treehouse, a real cute place.

While it's true that I couldn't help but think about Sienna the whole evening, it was nice to get out and socialize and see everyone!

Here is my mix!

Swapalicious

Finally, an update on the two swaps I joined in last month. The first swap I joined this year was a handwritten letter/handmade item swap that you can see here. I'm pissed off about the receipient of my creation as she never, ever acknowledged even receiving my swap. I sent her a direct e-mail to make sure she received it. Nothing. I sent her an e-mail via swap-bot. Nothing. I posted a comment on her blog. Nothing. I even discovered that she deleted my comment on her blog! Well, that just tells me she only joined the swap to get free stuff especially since she never sent in her swap. I feel bad for her partner in having received nothing! That just pisses me off. She got good ratings in her previous swaps so I don't know what the deal is. Sheesh. Anyway, I'm glad to report that my partner, Margy sent me a nice Cat Mermaid she made and a nice long letter all the way from Belgium! Perfect for the nursery!

CatMermaidblog.jpg

The 2nd swap I joined was called a Photo Scavenger Hunt. Each person lists 15 things she wants a picture of and their partner picks 10 to take and print out. I was a couple of days late in sending mine out to my partner Jennifer because of my hard drive issues. So I decided to get extra creative and put the photos in a stand up album that I got from here. Which of course I wanted to try forever and got the clear envelopes ages ago. The sample only used 3 envelopes and mine was 10 envelopes so I had to use some extra reinforcements with packing tape. I think it came out really cute!!

PhotSwapSent1blog.jpg
PhotSwapSent2blog.jpg

And I am also happy to report that my partner, Lisa, sent me all 15 images from my list all the way from Australia! She also sent me a zine of hers that she made.

Body and Soul

Febmixblog.jpg

Last Tuesday was the February CDMOM that I had to miss because I was sick and miserable. It was held at Revival. This is my February mix in honor of my recent obsession with the 2005 Pride and Prejudice movie. At the end of the movie, the male love interest (Mr. Darcy) tells the female love interest (Lizzie Bennett) that "you have bewitched me body and soul and I love, I love, I love you." siiiiighhhhh. I'm such a sucker for that crap! Here's the tracklist:

1. Into the Open • Heartless Bastards
2. Wasted State Of Mind • ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead
3. Yours To Keep • Teddybears
4. Love Will Come Through • Travis
5. Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above (Spank Rock Remix) • CSS
6. Only Love Can Set You Free • American Music Club
7. Happy Together • Tahiti 80
8. Je t'aime Moi Non Plus • Serge Gainsbourg
9. Fidelity • Regina Spektor
10. I Love You • The Pipettes
11. Heavy Hearts Brigade • The Little Ones
12. Soul Meets Body • Death Cab For Cutie
13. Crazy For Leaving • Catfish Haven
14. I'm Gonna Love You Anyway • Buckwheat Zydeco

Locations and Valentine ATCs

I made these ATCs for the Eclectic ATC yahoo group I belong to. The theme was Locations and Valentines. I was already working on the Locations ATCs when the UHU glues arrived so they were only used in the Valentines ATCs.

Locations3ATC.gif

Val1ATCblog.gif
The little card fits into the pocket on the ATC. The graphic from the card came from Lisa Vollrath's Valentine freebies from 2006.
Val2-3ATCblog.gif
I used acetate (really a 120 film negative protector) to cover the ATC on the right and fill it with confetti hearts.

Happy Groundhog's Day!

I haven't done much posting lately because my external hard drive is giving me a hard time. Whenever I try to access something on it, I have to wait a long time, which is unusual. I'm trying to back up all the photos (of which all my photos are on!) and it was driving me nuts. I was a little successful when I connected it to the laptop with a different firewire cable. It still wasn't smooth sailing but at least I managed to back up a lot of things.

Anyway, I wanted to post something so here is a necklace I made for a swap I joined over on Swap-bot. The swap was to handwrite a letter to your partner and send it along with a little handmade item. Since I always like to personalize, I went on my partner's blog and took a picture of her 2 year old son and made a necklace out of it with a glass marble. She lives in Missouri and I mailed it last Thursday so I hope she got it already.

Handmadeswapblog.jpg

I kept the necklace really simple because I didn't want to take away from the pendant. I hope she likes it. In today's mail, I received my swap from my partner all the way in Belgium. She made me this adorable stuffed cat mermaid. I'll post about it soon!

And it looks we Spring will come early this season since Phil did not see his shadow!

Recent creations

I'm slowly starting to get out of my creative funk and of course, I'll probably be full steam ahead right when the baby decides to join the world in April. HA. Here are some Mona Lisa ATCs for a swap on nervousness that I joined back in November.

MonaLisaATCsblog.jpg

And I actually made this birthday card for a fellow crafty blogger (which will be late!) yesterday MORNING before meeting my friend Pete for lunch in the East Village. I don't usually have that drive in the morning right before I go out.

Jenbdcardblog.jpg

And today we went to the Ragshop in Boro Park to find some fabric so i can attempt to make curtains for the nursery.

FabricCurtainsblog.jpg

I couldn't decide which I liked better so I bought both of them. As I feared, there is too much green. I'll have to look in my stash to see what I might be able to pair it with and then I was watching this episode of Uncommon Threads and a light bulb went off. I probably won't do so many different patches but it got me excited! I also really liked the other apron they were making too.

I also got excited about EZ Screen Print that I ordered the starter kit Saturday morning and it came TODAY!! Talk about fast! And they are in Arizona. I didn't expect it to come so fast and can't wait to give it a try since I haven't done any silkscreening since I took the class at Pratt a couple of years ago.

Must.Do.Art.

I've reached the point where I'm so bored with myself that I'm too bored to try and do anything. I know this is just a state of mind that I will get out of but when you're in it, you think you'll never leave this place. It sucks. I'll probably get into gear like 2 days before Christmas or something and start running around like a chicken without a head. And then it will be freezing cold. Yesterday I was in such a daze that I left my oatmeal in the microwave all day. No wonder I was so hungry at lunchtime! I can't blame that on the pregnancy cuz I've left stuff in the nuker before. I did manage to make some ATCs.

These are for the Eclectic ATC yahoo group I belong to.

ParisATCblog.jpg
Paris is the theme, in case you couldn't guess.

PopArtATCblog.jpg
Pop Art

I made these to trade with Ingrid. She gave me a dream theme because I can't work without a theme even though I went off on a tangent on 2 of them. I know, it's all in my head. Click the picture and be taken to a bigger version.

Don't call me baby!

So I totally spaced and forgot to put up my mix from last Tuesday's mixer. That's what happens when you are 20 weeks pregnant. Oops, did I say that? Well, if you can't guess from my mix, yep I'm knocked up! But I'll save the details on that for another entry. Here is the music!

Nov06blog.jpg

1. Make Me Mommy • Ben Folds
2. You Mama You • Jude
3. Mama Roux • Sandie Shaw
4. Mama & Papa • Supergrass
5. Break Your Mama's Back • Slow Runner
6. Mama's Room • Under the Influence of Giants
7. My Mother Was A Chinese Trapeze Artist • Tarkio
8. Mothers, Sisters, Daughters & Wives • Voxtrot
9. Ganja Babe • Michael Franti & Spearhead
10. Baby I Don't Care • Transvision Vamp
11. Say Baby • Davíd Garza
12. ...Baby One More Time • Fountains Of Wayne
13. The KKK Took My Baby Away • The Ramones
14. Don't Call Me Baby • Voice of the Beehive
15. Baby C'mon • Stephen Malkmus
16. You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby • The Smiths
17. Baby I • Amy Millan
18. Sweet Child O' Mine • Luna

I couldn't resist the picture I found of my niece Elianna. Not sure how old she was but this was a couple of years ago. We had the mixer at Cheap Shots in the East Village. Before that I met Joy for dinner. I was in the mood for pasta and since Sal Anthony's was close by we went there. NEVER AGAIN! It was the worst Italian food we ever had! The calamari was old and rubbery and we had to wait for our entrees for over half an hour. My linguini and clam sauce was rubbery too. Joy's pork chops wasn't bad. Oh! What a waste of calories! Anyway, Cheap Shots was fun with an air hockey game.

Fun mail

Some days I get crap in the mail but I've gotten some fun things recently! Today the postal clerk woke me early to give me Lisa's package. She was my swap partner for the handmade item (my item is here.) She made me this awesome bag from a recycled sweater. I love the colors! I'm debating whether to sew in a lining, since I'm sewing again.

HandmadeItemRecblog.jpg

Last week I got a set of 3 ATCs from Teresa. She had promised them to me sometime before the summer just because I posted to her blog but I can't complain that I just got them, they are beautiful! The scan doesn't show the wonderful green iridescent fabric and she handstitched everything!! Great job Teresa!

IridescentGreenATCsblog.jpg

I was also involved in the Hearts and Stars swap on this yahoo group called ATC Society. This is what I sent in:

And this is what I got back:

You're going to dance!

Tonight was the September mixer and we had it at Vol De Nuit a cute little bar that serves mussels and frites and belgium beer. Although my mix is called You're Going to Dance and Have Some Fun it's not what I would really say was truly dance music but I certainly think it would make your butt shake. The line is actually from the first song, Groove is in the Heart.

Sept06Fblog.jpg
This photo was taken in front of the NY public library.

I realize the cover is a bit hard to read but I didn't get a chance to change it since I'm actually freelancing this whole week!

Rainy day activities

It's been raining for the past 4 days so I started and finished some swaps I'm in on swap-bot. I made this domino pin for the Handmade Item swap and I was going for something like this but didn't want to stamp in black. Instead I stamped in purple and it wasn't dark enough. So I decided to start coloring it in with my new favorite pens by Sakura, the souffle and glaze. It's kinda cool, maybe I got carried away, I don't know but I hope my swap partner likes it.

dominopinswapblog.jpg

I also sent her this stamped vase with flower stamps and alcohol ink (she likes gardening).

Stampedvaseblog.jpg
StampedvaseCLOSEUPblog.jpg

For the Decorate a switchplate, I used a daisy picture I took and decoupaged it onto the switchplate. I think it came out cute!

switchplateblog.jpg

Of course I noticed some little dirt that must have stuck on there with the decoupage but I hope the person likes it anyway.

A couple of weeks ago, Yves asked me to make him a little pouch for his sharpie markers and I finally made it today!!

1stsewbagblog.jpg
1stsewbag2blog.jpg

I've had the fabric and the zippers for a long time. I used this tutorial and only had to redo something once but also noticed one tiny, forgiveable mistake. I was so excited! And Yves loves it, he thinks it's cute. The inside is lined with tan felt since I don't have very many 'manly' type fabrics. I was so excited, I made another one but I will definitely have to do it over. Not sure why the zipper is sticking out, maybe I didn't sew far enough up and it's a little too long. HAHA

2nd Anniversary!

Aug06Fcoverblog.jpg

Aug06backblog.jpg

Friday night we celebrated the 2nd year of exchanging mix CDs. You can see all my mixes here. The theme for my mix this month centered on two, for obvious reasons. Pete gave me the idea of two hit wonders and there were so many of them, it became a 2 cd mix. So hence the subtitle "a 2 cd mix of two hit wonders that made the top 20 compiled by 2 people for the 2 year anniversary." Pete really did all the work with compiling the information and getting the songs together. All I did was pick and choose the songs, re-organize the order and designed the cover. Yves burned the copies for me. So it actually took 3 people to put this together. Shhhh!

We had the mixer at the Frying Pan and since it was on a Friday night, Yves even came. It was a beautiful night although the boat was a bit more rocky than I would have liked. I think that kept the drinking down to a minimum, which is a shame since last year we had drunken fun taking head shots. The Frying Pan is really very cool and next to it is a tugboat that's all rusted out but they put tables and chairs on there so people can hang out there as well. Here are a couple of shots of the tugboat.

Life & Death

July06mixblog.jpg

Last night was the July mixer and we were supposed to have it at The Porch but they were closed for renovations! Grrr!! Bill's wife Laura was meeting him there and discovered it was closed. He called me while I was on the train coming into the city so I made a mad scramble of phone calls changing the venue to d.b.a., the place we went to last month.

I'm not entirely satisfied with my mix. I did it kinda last minute and with it being my birthday month, I originally wanted something happy but with my grandfather dying and going to the wake/funeral right after my birthday really put a downer on things. I've never been to a burial before and there's all this traditional stuff you have to do. So that combined with the heat and humidity we've been having really sacked my energy. I wouldn't say my birthday sucked but I've had better ones. So I came up with this Life & Death theme and used a picture I took at the Greenwood Cemetary.

So it was a wonderful surprise when everyone at the mixer sang happy birthday and gave me a birthday card and cupcakes and cake from Sugar Sweet Sunshine. YUMMY!!!! I think I tried just about all of their cupcakes now. The pistachio is always top notch but the red velvet, YUM! Even the chocolate one was good (which I didn't like on a previous trip.) and the carrot cake one. The cake was delicious too with almond paste inside and cute almond bees on top. Yup, I ate that too!! It's my birthday dammit!

Hello I'm a Craft-a-holic

I have 4 rolls of Holga pics from Joshua Tree that I need to scan but I've just been a craftaholic lately and haven't taken much pictures. Plus I got called into a job 2 days this week. Plus I have BBQs on my mind. And I'm home today waiting for the carpet guys to finish putting in the carpet. But I've been keeping busy doing mail art and ATC swaps. Here are some recent pieces:

mail art for lorrablog.jpg
For Lorra in PA. Background done with Alcohol Inks and then stamped on. I'm still experimenting with these inks. I don't think the scan shows all that well.

Orange and Yellow swap

I participated in the May colorific swap on flickr. The theme is orange and yellow so how can I not join? I made these things for the swap, my favorite being the domino pin. I got the dominos on sale for 25 cents for a pack of 7 or 9 with stretchy cord to make a bracelet at AC Moore. What a bargain, I should have bought out the whole stock!

dominopinblog.jpg
THe reason I made it 3 tiered was because they already had holes in them so why waste the holes by just making one?

flowerboxblog.jpg
I painted this wooden box (and made the pebble magnets inside) and glued on the flower on the lid. I love these flowers and used them on the mother's day cards I made over the weekend, which I'll post next week.

fishboxblog.jpg
My least favorite item, I traced over this fish with the fake leading and the orange is acrylic paint since the 'stained glass' paint didn't have orange and I didn't have enough red to mix with the yellow. I initially was very unhappy with it and was going to cover it with an orange bandana but then thought it had a certain charm to it.

Mail art and swaps continued

Still catching up with everything and as I started yesterday, here are some more creations!

I made these lavendar satchets for a swap on Kat's pad. They were fun to make but also reminded me that I still can't sew that great! HA!

satchetdreamblog.jpg

Here are 3 ATCs I did for a swap on swap-bot. You have to make 3 for 2 partners and so far I've only received 1 set from 1 partner. They were only due to be sent out last Friday so it's still early in the game. I'm still waiting for swaps that were due 2 weeks ago!!

Postcards and swaps

I've been a little lax in updating my blog in terms of stuff I've received and sent out so I'm going to make one big entry.

My friend Pete wanted to jump on the bandwagon of filling my mailbox with fun stuff so he started sending me these great Chronicle Books postcards. He'd include quotes and tidbits from OverheardinNY.com. At first I didn't realize it was him because he didn't sign them, even though he said he was going to send me stuff. Here are a couple of my favorites:

And my favorite quote and OverheardinNY.com tidbit:

I recently did an altered trinket swap with the ladies from Kat's pad. Here is the one sent to me from Barb. I wanted an Asian theme:

And here's the one I did for Barb. She wanted a woodsy theme. The side is a quote from Henry David Thoreau, Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler.

A Happy Mailbox

Yesterday I received my end of the jewelry swap I participated in here. It's a gorgeous piece and I'm so happy I didn't get the short end of the stick! I put it on right away!

JEswapblog1.jpg

Sima made the suede cording tie in the back so I can adjust it to whatever length I want. I think I'll put a hook back there to make it easier to put it on once I figure out the length. Here's a close up of the beads.

She's crafty!

I am so proud of myself! I joined a handmade jewelry swap over at swapmeet via swap-bot and I finished my swap with 2 weeks to spare!! I think it's safe to post the necklace I made since your swap partner is a secret. I hope she likes it!

This is my friend, Richard. He just started the night shift at work this week and I miss his sarcasm and jokes during the day. And I'm practicing my portrait shooting.

woohoo! so far I've received 2 cd mixes out of 5 from the piddleloop swap. One was from elizabeth and a double cd mix from garrett. I haven't listened to garrett's yet since I've been a work horse this week (I didn't leave work until midnight on Thursday and THAT IS NOT NORMAL!) There is a dual cd mix swap going on but I'm not sure if I want to do that one. Besides the fact that to me quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality but more so because I seem to get the raw end of the deal in these swaps. I guess I'll just see if I get the 3 remaining mixes that I'm supposed to get!

Piddleloop swap

closerinsideweb.jpg

Mailed all my cds yesterday for the piddleloop swap. I hope everyone likes them. I had fun painting all the covers "stained glass" like and since I only had to do 5, it wasn't so bad. I think I screwed up the mailings for the 2 international swappers I had and it was only half my fault! I used the automated machine to weigh and stamp everything since the line was way too long and I would have been late to work. I was surprised that there was an international button because I thought you had to fill out a customs form for international. Well, after I got everything stamped, I put it in the big box next to it and right after I dropped everything in, I noticed the sign that said "NO INTERNATIONAL MAIL." OOPS! I told a mail carrier what I did and she said I have a 50/50 chance of it getting to it's destination. So, it might end up back in my mailbox in a few days or actually make it to Australia and Sweden.
