Havana

Last night I went out with the Bumblebees for my birthday dinner. Yes, I know my birthday was in July but it's hard to coordinate schedules and 2 months late is not that bad for us.

We went to Havana Alma de Cuba. I forgot my camera so no pictures. Me and Joy had gone there a earlier this year and the food was so delicious I made it a point to come back with the bees.

For appetizers, we had Fufu con Camarones, mashed green plantinas with sauteed shrimp and garlic. YUM! And we also got a seafood salad with shrimp, calamari and little tiny scallops. YUM! For entrees, I got the ropa vieja, I love that dish! They put the beef in a bowl made of plantain chips and it came with rice and beans. I even had leftovers! Joy got the roast suckling pig, I think. It was some sort of pork and it was delicious! DeeDee got one of the specials, seafood casserole and it had clams, shrimp, lobster and other good stuff. Ruthie got filet of red snapper with a crunchy green plaintain crust in a sofrito sauce. That was good too! I also got a side of vegetables to be good. For dessert we all shared warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. I don't think I have to say it but YUM!

I got some cool birthday presents too. Joy got me the book Me and Marley, she said pet owners seem to love the book. She had sandwiched the book between 2 tiles that I had wanted from her during the summer. Ruthie got me a set of scented candles and a knitting kit. DeeDee got me this wire coiling gizmo for my beading and some knitting accessories. I thought it was cute that they got knitting confused with crocheting cuz I don't knit. Well, I guess I'll give it a try now!

Of Montreal/Jamie Lidell at Irving Plaza

OMkevin1blog.jpg

I bailed on Joy to see the Raconteurs at Roseland this past Tuesday. All along I thought she got tickets to their Monday night show and being the DOY she is, she never remembers what date she gets the tickets for unless they are right in front of her. So I totally blame her for my double booking on Tuesday. I was super excited that Of Montreal was playing with Jamie Lidell. I love, love, love Of Montreal and haven't seen them since last August and I didn't go to their free show at the park this summer. And Jamie is always fun. So I rallied Pete to go and he actually got us in for free cuz it was a Wired event. Even better! So I bailed on Joy and Tammy was more than happy to take my place. As much as I know the Racs would put on a kick ass awesome rock show (which they did, I hear) I knew that OM and JL would be fun and they were!

Nate and Mari were also joining us and I met them at Sharaku for dinner, me and Yves favorite Japanese restaurant. Delicious as always.

I won't go into the details of the show but Of Montreal were super fun and played for a little bit over an hour. During the show, Kevin Barnes put on these really short shorts and there was a bit of S&M like play during one part. There was a stupid tall guy in front of me that thought dancing was swaying side to side with his hands in his pockets while his little pixie friend was jumping up and down. At least she was only bugging the person right behind her and not 3 people behind like the tall dork was. I swear I really wanted to smack him. They ended their set with The Party's Crashing Us and thankfully the dork was no longer right in front of me so I was both dancing to the song and for delight that I had an unobstructed view again.

Pete ended up leaving before Jamie came on because his friend was going through a break up. He's such a good friend. Shoot, I wouldn't be answering my phone during a concert!

Jamie came on around 11ish. He was fun as usual and as usual we had some idiots in front of us. A couple that seemed to be on a first date or something. They kept talking and kept creeping backwards which in turn made us move backwards so we ended up a few feet back than where we started. Nate and Mari only last about 30 minutes. They were super tired and Jamie's light show didn't really help. I stayed around for a little bit longer but left before midnight. I guess seeing him 3 times in a year might have been a little much. But I'm glad I got to see Of Montreal. Did I mention that I love them?

Fun mail

Some days I get crap in the mail but I've gotten some fun things recently! Today the postal clerk woke me early to give me Lisa's package. She was my swap partner for the handmade item (my item is here.) She made me this awesome bag from a recycled sweater. I love the colors! I'm debating whether to sew in a lining, since I'm sewing again.

Last week I got a set of 3 ATCs from Teresa. She had promised them to me sometime before the summer just because I posted to her blog but I can't complain that I just got them, they are beautiful! The scan doesn't show the wonderful green iridescent fabric and she handstitched everything!! Great job Teresa!

I was also involved in the Hearts and Stars swap on this yahoo group called ATC Society. This is what I sent in:

The Kills

So I went to see The Kills Friday night at Southpaw. I like that venue because it is small but it's always hot in there. Anyway, I went with Joy, Tammy and Mark. Pete was supposed to come but he bailed at the last minute. Since it was a sold out show, I was able to sell his ticket. Me and Joy met up for dinner and went to Al Di La. Joy has always raved about this place except she called it something else, something that doesn't sound very italian. Anyway, we got mussels for appetizers (YUM!) and I got the skirt steak medium and Joy got the pasta special with pork shoulder, goat cheese and ricotta. The steak was absolutely awesome, it was cooked perfectly! Joy's pasta dish was amazing. The pasta was cooked just right. I swear, orgasmic. We also shared the pear cake for dessert. This place doesn't take reservations but since we got there early enough, we didn't have to wait for a table. And they don't rush you out either and always fill up your water glass before you need to ask. I will definitely make my way back there!

We met up with Tammy and Mark a little before nine and made Tammy eat, since she hadn't already. There were 2 openers that night so we were fine. We went to Los Pollitos II. Everything smelled good and Tammy said her dish was delicious.

Ok, so on to the show. They made us check our bags since it was a sold out show but I had to fill my pockets up with my wallet, chapstick and extra batteries for the camera. The Kills didn't come on until about 11:30 and Jamie apologized for the delay. Alison was wired! She couldn't stand still. The show was great and loud. My ears were ringing afterwards. They played for about an hour and then did the encore but we went to get our bags during that. The added plus was that it only took me half an hour to get home!

Happy Birthday Sweetie!!

YvesNskipsilly1blog.jpg

It's Yves' 35th birthday today. It's also Sunday so he's spending the day watching football. He didn't want a big deal for his birthday so it was just us for dinner last night. We went to Song a Thai place in Park Slope and sister to Joya, another Thai place in Boerum Hill that we had gone to before. We got Mango curry puffs with chicken and calamari for appetizers. Those were really good. Our entrees weren't as good as the apps. I got a curry dish, which I usually don't get but wanted to try something different. It was alright. It was in a red coconut curry sauce. Yves got one of the specials, skirt steak with chinese broccoli in garlic sauce. I'm always dismayed when they don't ask you how you want your steak cooked. Anyway, he said it was ok, he wasn't crazy about the sauce. It looked a little too well done for my tastes, nothing like the superb skirt steak I got at Al Di La on Friday before the Kills show but I'll write about that in another entry.

Here's another goofy picture of Yves and Skippy.

I also posted another sweet one on fotolog here. I also forgot to mention that my parents took us out to dim sum yesterday for Yves' birthday. I gave him his present a day early too, a timbuk2 messenger bag.

You're going to dance!

Tonight was the September mixer and we had it at Vol De Nuit a cute little bar that serves mussels and frites and belgium beer. Although my mix is called You're Going to Dance and Have Some Fun it's not what I would really say was truly dance music but I certainly think it would make your butt shake. The line is actually from the first song, Groove is in the Heart.

I realize the cover is a bit hard to read but I didn't get a chance to change it since I'm actually freelancing this whole week!

BH&IC at Summerstage

BHSummerstageblog.jpg

Tuesday me and Joy went to see BH at the Summerstage. There was a steady rain all day and it didn't stop at the show. We missed 45 minutes of his show since we were in Chinatown for dinner and the 4/5/6 was all messed up. He actually came on 7:30 like his website said! He played for 2 hours, which included 2 encores. I thought for sure Damian would come out for a song but he didn't. It was still a bit on the short side for BH. Needless to say, Ben was absolutely fantastic. His acoustic encore was a bit on the short side but that was fine with me. I like his more rocking stuff. Acoustic I could just listen to his albums. Joy was complaining that it was just a teaser and we didn't see enough. I agreed. The next day she found someone on craigslist that was selling his Wednesday nite tix for face value. After we both contacted him, Joy set up a meeting time for 6:30 in front of Penn since he was coming from LI. I thought that was a bit on the late side and we were going to miss Damian's set again but as long as we saw all of BH's set, I didn't really care. Well, the dude was late and it was 7:30 when we decided it wasn't worth it. Even if he showed up then, it was going to take at least 45 minutes to get up to the summerstage, which would mean getting there the same time as we did the night before. At least we got to see him.

So we decided to head over to S'MAC. I knew I shouldn't have but I wanted some kind of consolation. I did good tho and ordered the garden, which included broccoli, cauliflower and mushrooms and lite cheddar and whole wheat pasta. I also got the breadcrumbs. It wasn't bad considering it was lite. Joy got the cheeseburger, full force, no lite stuff for her. Overall it was good but the breadcrumbs weren't crunchy enough and seemed too fine. It caught in the bottom of my throat and made me cough. I don't think I would go out of my way to go there again, only if I was in the 'hood.

I'm on a roll!

Sewingcoverblog.jpg

More rain this weekend equals more indoor activities. There's probably a bunch of things I could do like upgrade my blog to get rid of those pesky spam comments or redo my website but I already spend too much time in front of the computer anyways. I decided to make a cover for my sewing machine!! I don't think I did too bad. It's not perfect, I ended up having a little bit too much fabric on one side. Not sure why. But overall, I think I did pretty good for a novice. I would have loved to have made a hole on the top so the handle could come through but I thought that would have been a little too ambitious. In due time, in due time!

I also fixed that bag I made! I ended up opening up my turning hole, pulling it back through and sewing it up more on the sides. I'm too chicken to cut off the zipper. It worked!
