Strike Three

Well, I got my rejection letter in the mail yesterday from Soho Photo Gallery's Krappy Kamera show. Entered 3 years in a row and didn't get in 3 years in a row. I'm sad but can't say I'm really surprised. I just need to be more innovative and take more chances. I think I'm too safe. And I don't take enough photos. Well, here is what I submitted this year.

This year they are keeping all the entries and are going to display them 'collage' style in the upstairs gallery. It will be interesting to see all the different entries that didn't make it. I'm sure I'll be blown away and can't wait to see it.

Vote for my entry!

I submitted my first photo to jpg magazine. It's kinda late in the game for this issue but voting doesn't end until Dec. 8 so there is still time!

5 Years and we go to the Penitentiary

ESPGargoyleblog1.jpg

Saturday was me and Yves 5 year wedding anniversary. It's amazing that it has been 5 years because it doesn't feel like it. I won't get into the mushy stuff and say how we're still giddy in love, blah, blah, blah... We decided not to do any cards or gifts. Honestly, there is nothing I really want and besides, Yves is so supportive of my not having a real job, what more could I ask for? We did go to dinner on Friday night and I took him to Al Di La, the wonderful Italian restaurant I went to last month. We went early (6:30) since they don't take reservations hoping to get a table without waiting too long but I guess it took too long to find a parking spot because we got sent to the side bar, a smaller version of the restaurant but with the same menu/kitchen. I have to be honest and say I wasn't too thrilled with their new fall menu but you can't ever go wrong with one of their specials. I got the pork ribs and YUM YUM YUM, the meat just fell right off the bone. Yves ordered a whole young chicken, which I was surprised about because he doesn't like dealing with bones or using his fingers to eat. He almost got one of the pasta specials but since there was cheese in our app, he didn't want to have too much cheese. Of course he kinda grumbled about the chicken when it came and I tried to offer him one of my ribs but he passed. Finally, after I ate 2 ribs I made him trade with me and he finally agreed. His dish wasn't bad but the ribs were way better. I was stuffed because I also ate too much bread.

So that was Friday night. Saturday, we wanted to go on a day trip and decided that if it was nice and sunny, we would go up to Hudson county. If it was cloudy and overcast, we would got to Philadelphia to Eastern State Penitentiary. Guess where we ended up?

The drive took only about 2 hours with a tiny bit of traffic. We had lunch at Jack's Firehouse right across the street. YUMMY!! Yves said his burger tasted great and my brisket sandwich was delicious! It came with fries and a salad and they gave us biscuits and homemade jam. YUM! And they were so friendly!

Ok, so finally on to the prison. It is now an historical site owned by the state of Pennsylvania. I think it closed in 1971. One of the differences with this prison is that the cells are made out of concrete and wooden doors so you can't even see who is in the next cell. That's pretty grueling! I don't think I have much more to say about it that you can't see in the pictures. It was quite an interesting day.

More Coney fun

WWThunderCCblog.jpg

After the museum on Friday, we continued the day by going to Coney Island, specifically for the lighting ceremony for the parachute jump ("the Eiffel Tower of Brooklyn" HA!) Borough President Marty Markowitz decided to add 'bling' to the parachute jump and have it lit every night and on special occasions/holidays it would change colors. I think it's a waste of money but whatever, I'm not a politician. Anyway, we had dinner at Totonno's. Peter has never been there but it was all agreed that it wasn't the best pizza they ever had. Plus Yves is not a big fan of the woman who owns it and her kinda rough attitude. I don't mind going there as long as the wait isn't too long, at least it's better for you than Nathan's.

We went on the Wonder Wheel! YAY! What fun! I don't remember having been on it before and of course we got on the swinging car. Yves has funny video of us screaming and acting like idiots.

ConeyRideLECCblog.jpg

We took some night shots while waiting for this lighting ceremony. They were going to show all the different lights on it and this was the only time they were going to do that. Well, it was LAME! There really wasn't much to it. They had their regularly scheduled Friday night fireworks and that was actually pretty cool.

1 Joshua Tree holga shot

JT big rocksblog.jpg

I manage to scan 1 of the 4 holga rolls of Joshua Tree pictures I have. I thought this a cool shot and can't remember if I saw how the clouds were over the rocks or if I was just lucky.

Jackie, whom I know from the toycamera website, was getting rid of some old cameras. I bought this shitload of cameras from her for a very good price and picked them up from her yesterday. She's in Brooklyn, too. I honestly don't know what I'm going to do with most of them.

Where the Streets Have No Name

We ended our trip by going to Joshua Tree National Park on Monday. After Tammy and Mark dropped us off at the Palm Springs airport so we can rent our own car for the day, we drove up to Joshua Tree. It was further than we thought. I guess it took about 1.5 hours. Joshua Tree is really cool! It wasn't as breathtaking as Grand Canyon or Red Rocks but it certainly has it's charm. Here are some pics.

Yesterday me, Yves and JW went to Greenwood Cemetery to shoot some pictures. It was a beautiful sunny warm day, I think in the early 70's, at least! The cemetery is HUGE! Daylight Saving Time screwed us up and it got late so fast. We had a bit of trouble finding our way out of there. We'll have to look for Bernstein's grave another time.

These 2 images were used in the new fotolog book.

I have to say, initially, I was really excited with the book. It came out very well and I know that a lot of work had been put into it. Then I looked up Yves picture and it's tiny! In the intro section. I think that really SUCKS! And really unfair. Why freakin' bother? I'm sure many people may have been forgotten and not included and you can't really please everyone and people's feelings will get hurt but for goodness sakes, this is SHUGGY for crissakes! I'm sure half those people in that book aren't even on fotolog anymore! Truly disappointed. I know that fotolog isn't officially affiliated with the book.

I just got my copy of Lightleaks Magazine, which has this photo printed in it. The theme was Nobody: Where has everyone gone?. I took this shot in the fall at Coney Island with my Lubitel 2. I think everyone involved did a great job. You should go get a copy!

Last month I finally got my Minolta back from the shop. I took it in right before Halloween. I missed the depth of field the 7HI gave me, although it's not evident in this shot. We finally went down by the water and took Skippy with us to enjoy the different view.

My feet hate me

bbhorblog.jpg
horizon shot of Brooklyn Bridge from the summer of '05.

Yesterday we walked over the Brooklyn Bridge after eating in Chinatown since it felt like spring. My feet hate me! I did not wear the proper shoes and it didn't help that we were standing for 2 hours after that. We went to see a slide lecture of an old friend of ours, Gary at Postive Focus. You can see his work here and here. I applaud his work and have a lot of respect for him that he does this. He mentioned that most people walk by the homeless because it's just easier and safer not to get involved and that it was easier and safer to look at his pictures of the homeless instead. Yep, that's me. I felt bad at first that he pegged me but I shouldn't apologize for it. That's just the way it is.

Krappy Kamera Krap!

This is the second year I entered Soho Gallery's Krappy Kamera competition and the second year I did not get chosen. I'm going to try not to get discouraged as I am positive there were tons of wonderful entries that did not get picked. I really thought I had a chance this year since I did not have to send in slides but actual prints instead. I was a little surprised that I got my entry back so fast, a week later! I wondered if they gave it a real good look or if they already picked the winners since I put my entry in on the very last day. I hope that was not the case cuz that would suck! Anyhow, here are the photos I entered. Do you think they suck?

Yesterday was Yves' birthday and we went up to Western Mass. to attend the Big E! Our road buddies were Peter and Meredith and we drove up Friday night. We stayed at Peter's sister Joanne's house. Good peeps! All good peeps. Saturday we woke up bright and early and after having yummy egg sandwiches made by Peter's other sister, Lori, we went on our way!

We had the Clyde photo shoot last Sunday, the 21st in DUMBO. Man, it was HOT and HUMID! Totally disgusting and we were out at 10 am in the morning. I only took Horizon and Holga shots that day. I've finished scanning in the horizon shots and almost done with the holga shots. I'm pleased with them. I'm really loving this Kodak T max 100 film I used for this shot and the red filter. I definitely need to get more of this film.

BBQ Horizon experiment

Well, a failed experiment. I was trying to get Cindy (in yellow shirt) to appear twice in the photo. Since the lens of the horizon swings open, I was hoping this would be a little easier to achieve. Well, as you can see, obviously not! I will try again!

2/5

Richarddrinksweb.jpg

This is my friend, Richard. He just started the night shift at work this week and I miss his sarcasm and jokes during the day. And I'm practicing my portrait shooting.

woohoo! so far I've received 2 cd mixes out of 5 from the piddleloop swap. One was from elizabeth and a double cd mix from garrett. I haven't listened to garrett's yet since I've been a work horse this week (I didn't leave work until midnight on Thursday and THAT IS NOT NORMAL!) There is a dual cd mix swap going on but I'm not sure if I want to do that one. Besides the fact that to me quantity doesn't necessarily mean quality but more so because I seem to get the raw end of the deal in these swaps. I guess I'll just see if I get the 3 remaining mixes that I'm supposed to get!
